Scleral lenses are large-diameter rigid contact lenses that rest on the sclera (the white of the eye) without touching the cornea at all. A layer of fluid (saline) is retained between the cornea and the lens, keeping the eye moist throughout the day and creating a smooth, sharp optical surface even over an irregular cornea.
How does it work?
Unlike regular lenses that rest on the cornea, scleral lenses "vault" over it and rest on the sclera instead. The fluid layer between them fills in all the irregularities that cause blurred vision, effectively restoring a perfect optical surface to the cornea. The result: vision as sharp as that of a healthy eye.
Who is it for?
Three main situations: (1) advanced keratoconus and irregular corneas where standard or rigid lenses are no longer enough. (2) After laser surgery or corneal transplant, when vision is still not clear. (3) Severe, chronic dry eye, where even silicone-hydrogel lenses fail to solve the problem; the fluid layer keeps the eye moist all day long.
